Percentage change calculator
Find how much a price moved in percent, or what a value becomes after a given percentage increase or decrease.
How it's calculated
- Percentage change = (to − from) ÷ from × 100. From 100 to 125: +25%; from 80 to 60: −25%.
- Increase: value × (1 + p ÷ 100). 200 + 15% = 230. Decrease: value × (1 − p ÷ 100). 200 − 15% = 170.
Questions
Why doesn't a 25% fall undo a 25% rise?
The percentages apply to different bases. 100 + 25% = 125, but 125 − 25% = 93.75. To get from 125 back to 100 the price has to fall 20%.
What is the difference between percent and percentage points?
A rate going from 2% to 3% rose by 1 percentage point, but by 50% in relative terms. This calculator gives the relative change.
Can the starting value be negative?
Yes. The change is measured against the size of the starting value, so a move from −100 to −50 shows as +50%. The starting value cannot be zero.
How do I find the change over several steps?
Enter the first and the last value. The result already includes the effect of all the steps in between.
